I enjoy traveling and tasting food from different parts of the world. I also enjoy playing basketball and tennis but recently pickup golf with my son and found it to be very challenging but fun. Other than English, I am also fluent in Taiwanese and Mandarin.
Education: Dr. Kao received his MD degree from University of Southern California School of Medicine in 1996 and completed his Internal Medicine Residency at UC Davis Medical Center in California. He then moved to Michigan where he completed a combined clinical/basic research GI Fellowship at the University of Michigan. During his GI Fellowship training, he studied the effect of tumor-derived TGF-β on dendritic cell tumor vaccine.
Research: After joining the GI faculty at University of Michigan in 2002, he transitioned successfully from his K08 to R01 focusing on understanding the mechanism of GI immune homeostasis and was elected into the honorary society of the American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI). He has active collaborations with numerous investigators in China and Taiwan. As an active National Institute of Health investigator, his current research focuses on the role of gut microbiota in diseases of the GI tract.
Service: Dr. Kao is also passionate about resident and fellow research training and currently serves as the Associate Vice Chair of Basic & Translational Research in the Department of Internal Medicine and co-Director of NIH T32 Training Program in Digestive Sciences at University of Michigan. He is also a standing member of NIH DMHI study section and an elected member of American Society of Clinical Investigation.
Clinical: He is also a practicing gastroenterologist with clinical interests including H. pylori, IBD, Celiac disease, and C. difficile colitis. He has established several clinical protocols at University of Michigan Health System including management of refractory H. pylori infection and the use of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) for recurrent C. difficile colitis.
Conclusion
